📈 Global plastic production has surged to 359 million tonnes in 2018. ♻️ In Europe, energy recovery and recycling are common ways to manage plastic waste, but 25% still ends up in landfills.
🌏 Half of the recycled plastic is exported to countries outside the EU. 🇨🇳 China used to be a major destination, but import restrictions have shifted this trend.
💰 Low plastic recycling rates result in significant economic and environmental losses. 🌫️ Plastic production and incineration contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.
The EU is taking action to address these challenges, with targets for recycled content, packaging rules, and a 55% plastic recycling goal by 2030.
